Join the Sea Collective for a special creative workshop at Fanad Lighthouse.
Donegal’s waters boast incredible marine biodiversity and our coastal communities have a rich maritime history and connection to the sea.
Many Irish language phrases associated with the ocean have a beautiful, lyrical quality to them with evocative mental imagery, but sadly, many have fallen out of use and are not known to the younger generation. An example is ‘madadh doininne’ or ‘hounds of the storm’ (incoming dark storm clouds over the horizon of the sea).
Young people will choose Irish language phrases related to our oceans, and be given full rein of their creative expression to produce visual art installations using different materials, showing their interpretation of their chosen phrase.
Participants, working in groups using different mediums (drawing, painting, crafting), will be guided by an experienced artist to nurture their creative skills. During the activity, marine biologists will share their knowledge of the marine biodiversity on our home shores. The beautiful phrases, along with wildlife stories, will result in a variety of incredible artistic interpretations.
Please note: This is a public event and a photographer will be present for part of the session. Attendees will be asked to sign in and grant consent for photographs to be taken. If you would prefer not to have you or your child’s photograph taken, please make the photographer aware of this.
