-I hate the silence.
-I wonder where that hate will take us.
On a cold, dark night in Dublin City, Atly, Colin, and John are locked in overnight cells under the watch of two somewhat eccentric guards. The night drags on, and time seems to stand still. They take a long journey to the bottom of the barrel, telling stories and clashing with each other to keep the crushing weight of boredom from setting in.
Written as part of Dublin Youth Theatre’s Writers’ Group 2020, “Night in A Cell” is a showcase of the work that youth theatre members undertake in DYT. Under the guidance of Playwright-in-Residence John Grogan, the Writers’ Group offers DYT members a chance to develop their writing skills and encourage them to form their own theatrical voice with the goal of producing a one-act play on topics of interest to young people.
This piece will be performed live over Zoom, directed by Casey Hallahan. It is adapted specifically to the challenges and possibilities of performing online. The actors are using their own homes as their performance spaces, transforming them into the world of the play. Night in a Cell is the culmination of a collaborative process with the young people to realise it in the online space.
