Eastside RUR (Rossum’s Universal Robots) workshop

  • Exhibition

East-side R.U.R. is a multidisciplinary undertaking that includes a series of three workshops leading up to the main event and the final installation on June 15th. This project draws its inspiration from R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots), a science fiction play written by Karel Čapek in 1920. Its main objective is to educate young children about the origins of the term “robot” while also fostering critical thinking regarding the pros and cons of technology. The project specifically targets 9-12 age group that is believed to benefit the most from the workshops.

During the workshops, children will participate in two sessions focused on working with wood and metal to construct their own robots. Each robot will feature a unique representation of the child’s self-portrait as its head. The last workshop will center around creative writing, including a poetry workshop. The aim is to explore what kind of poetry robots might enjoy, and even consider whether robots could write poetry themselves.

We will be presenting our East-side R.U.R. exhibition on June 15th, featuring wooden and metal robots along with creative writing and poetry. The exhibition will be held at the ARD Family Resource Centre. Refreshements provided during workshops and main exhibition.
