Hands On History

  • Workshop

This project will be a unique heritage workshops tailored specifically for children to learn about the creative processes in print and literary history. Scéal Heritage Consultancy will facilitate a series of three themed live workshops on the day of Crinniú na nÓg, where children will participate in a hands-on history event through interactive and engaging craft activities. These workshops are offered in Ballina Library, an appropriate setting for bookmaking! The workshops offer a new way for children to engage with heritage learning in a creative and entertaining format, with children leaving the workshops with a unique hand-crafted souvenir as well as new information about creativity in the past, and an encouragement to continue to continue their own creativity in the future.

The unique experience of creating your very own hardback book from scratch! Children begin their experience by learning the skill of origami to create a traditional printer’s hat, which they then print with traditional wooden stamps and ink. They then choose colours and paper to create their hardback book covers, learn to sew the pages of the book together for binding, and finish by decorating the covers with a range of fun materials including ribbon, feathers, stickers, stamps, and assorted craft embellishments. The completed book can be used as a special personal storybook, or a journal, sketchbook, or diary.1.5 hours in length. All materials provided.
