This project involves the 24 children attending Killavil National School in County Sligo in celebrating the rich musical links common to the South Sligo Summer School and Killavil School in a unique and creative way. The school marks its 120th anniversary in 2019 and the project involves a number of initiatives.
Fiona Doherty will facilitate a series of workshops with the children in preparation for a performance incorporating composing, local musical heritage, performance, and dance, and including all the children at every class level and level of musical ability.
Rose Conway Flanagan (pictured) from New York will teach a fiddle workshop for experienced young musicians up to 18 years of age in Killavil National School, with the emphasis on developing their repertoire and style.
Rose will also facilitate a fun music hour for children of all ages and playing ability. Caoimhe Kearins is one of the finest exponents of lilting, fiddling and traditional singing in Ireland, and is the current All-Ireland Senior Fiddle Champion. Caoimhe will teach a fiddle workshop. John Wynne and John McEvoy will facilitate a joint fiddle and flute duet playing workshop for experienced young fiddle and flute players.
There will also be an open session for children of all ages and playing experience to come and play a tune/join in a big session of music for fun. Children can bring their own instruments, while percussion instruments will be provided for young children.
