The Ourselvesopedia project aims to map Inchicore as experienced by the children who live in it, and to celebrate children’s identities and aspirations by getting them to create a book about themselves, as individuals and as members of a community, a sort of 'Ourselvesopedia'.
Working over several weeks with writer Juliette Saumande and illustrator Margaret Anne Suggs, the children are invited to look at their neighbourhood through different lenses, including geography, history and heritage (at individual, family, community levels), school life, hobbies, sports, food, pets and animals, etc.
As well as using existing maps, iconography and textual documentation, the children will produce their own texts and images through creative writing and illustration activities. An exhibition of the individual books produced over the course of the project will conclude this exciting creative process.
To launch the exhibition on June 23, a Big Picture event will also take place where the local community is invited to fill in an illustrated map of the area with their own drawings, adding, literally, themselves into the picture, their homes and everything that matters to them in the area.
