Sowing Creativity

  • Workshop

Ballinasloe Library invites children aged 8+ to help create a sensory garden in our outside courtyard.

The benefits of sensory spaces are becoming increasingly well-known: they reduce sensory overload for people who may find certain situations and places overwhelming. Sensory Spaces can also provide increased sensory input for those who require more stimulation, to enable them to regulate their sensory and emotional needs.  A sensory garden not only allows children and adults to connect to nature but encourages them to become more aware of their surroundings.  With this in mind, our sensory garden will stimulate and engage the five basic senses of sight, smell, sound, touch and taste.

A local horticulturalist will oversee the placing of specially-selected sensory plants in special wheelchair-accessible containers, all of which will be sourced from a local business.  These plants will be selected, based on their scents, colours, and textures.

This project will allow children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to firstly plant a variety of flowers and herbs, along with creating a display of plants for their colours, smells and textures.  By making the containers wheelchair-accessible, we are creating an opportunity for everyone, regardless of additional needs, to get involved.
