Mullingar Arts Centre is delighted to present the Statue Poetry project for Cruinniú na nÓg. This is a pre-recorded poetry performance, using different statues and sculptures from around Mullingar town as filming locations.
Mullingar Arts Centre has been hosting a series of Zoom workshops where young people are encouraged to use their local surroundings as an inspiration for their pieces, particularly the local statues in Mullingar.
The statues/sculptures around the town have links to history, culture and even writing, with one being inspired by James Joyce. There are some that pay homage to the history of the town itself, and others that mark the struggles it faced, in times like the Famine.
These pieces may inspire some of the young people to create their poem based on the history of a town with a rich historical and cultural past.
Since the restrictions started, we have all become very familiar with our local surroundings; using these surroundings to inspire poetry is a good way for the area’s young people to connect with their locality.
Mullingar Arts Centre looks forward to sharing performances of the original works at 12.30pm on its website and Facebook pages on June 12th.
