‘Talisman’ is an exciting and creative project that will introduce TY students in Fingal to the idea of a ‘collection’. In this programme, the students will have an opportunity to explore the collection of Newbridge House, Donabate with artist Barbara Knežević and curator Rayne Booth. The group will discuss why people collect objects, what makes some objects more precious to us than others, and what meaning materials and objects can carry.
This project will include a virtual tour of the artwork and treasured objects collected by the Cobbe family at Newbridge House. Additionally, Barbara will introduce the group to her artwork, looking at the minerals, stones, clay, wax, and other precious objects and materials used in her practice. The young people will be asked to consider objects in their everyday lives and discuss what they’ve discovered at Newbridge House before deciding which objects they would like for their very own collection and why.
Barbara will direct the students in creating their own personal objects and sculptures using clay and beeswax. At the end of the workshops, each participant will have created a number of precious objects, which will be displayed in the final exhibition.
A documentary film of the creative process will be available to view on June 12th at the Creative Ireland Fingal website. An indoor exhibition of the artwork produced may also take place, depending on Covid guidelines.
