Laois Schools Interactive Folklore Exhibition

  • Workshop

In 1937, the Irish Folklore Commission initiated a revolutionary scheme wherein schoolchildren were encouraged to collect and document folklore and history in their neighbourhoods. This became known as ‘The Schools Collection.’ Topics included local history and monuments, folktales and legends, riddles and proverbs, songs, customs and beliefs, games and pastimes, traditional work practices and crafts, etc. The children collected this material mainly from their parents, grandparents, and elders of the local community. This material is housed at the National Folklore Collection, UCD, and digitised at www.duchas.ie.

This audio-visual presentation will be created with and by local schoolchildren in Portarlington, Co. Laois. Local folklore from The Schools Collection, collected in the 1930s, will be brought to life in the modern classroom with voice-over, illustration, animation, and motion graphics.
