What lies beneath…. an exploration of rocks and stones

Join geoarchaeologist Dr Stephen Mandal of Dig it Kids for a family friendly geological adventure. 

Bring your rocks and together we can figure out how to identify them and how they were formed, and see where they fit into the timeline of Irish and world geology. Is it granite, formed over 400 million years ago deep beneath the earth’s surface, or sandstone deposited through the forces of a huge ancient river, or limestone formed at the bottom of a tropical ocean and teaming with fossils of the organisms that were attached to the sea floor some 325 million years ago.

Don’t forget to bring your rocks!
