Eastside RUR (Rossum’s Universal Robots)

  • Workshop

Eastside RUR is a multidisciplinary undertaking that includes a series of four workshops leading up to the main event and the final installation on 15 June. This project draws its inspiration from Rossum’s Universal Robots, a science fiction play written by Karel Čapek in 1920. Its main objective is to educate young children about the origins of the term ‘robot’ while also fostering critical thinking regarding the pros and cons of technology.

During the workshops, children will participate in two sessions focused on working with wood and metal to construct their own robots. Each robot will feature a unique representation of the child’s self-portrait as its head. Then participants will turn to creative writing with a poetry workshop. The aim is to explore what kind of poetry robots might enjoy, and even consider whether robots could write poetry themselves. The final workshop will delve into photography, where children will be tasked with capturing self-portraits (or selfies), which will then be digitally edited and combined with collaged poems.

We will be presenting our Eastside RUR exhibition on 15 June, alongside digital inkjet prints of ‘selfies’ accompanied by collaged poems in both digital and physical form.
