Rock the Block: Rhyme Island’s rap & performance showcase

If you’ve been following Rhyme Island’s social channels lately, you’ll have seen the inspiring song and rap-writing projects that young people all over Ireland have been busily working on.

A youth rap initiative powered by GMCBeats and the Kabin Studio, over the last while Rhyme Island has been equipping young people all over Ireland with the skills to tell their own stories through the dynamic mediums of rap, songwriting, and video.

Today’s the day to see it all showcased live at some of the exciting Rhyme Island events taking place for Cruinniú na nÓg!

Rock the Block at Elizabeth Fort, Cork City | June 10

Join the Rhyme Island crew at the Rock the Block Festival at Elizabeth Fort in the heart of Cork City. In partnership with Music Generation Cork City and Cork City Council, a fun, free, creative day of music, rap showcases, and workshops is on the cards. 

Kicking off from 10am and lasting all day long, Rock the Block will showcase some incredibly talented young hip hop artists and rappers from all across Ireland.

Enjoy super performances from the Kabin Studio and GMCBeats along with their artists Misneach, MC Tiny, Jamie the King, Luke & Ellen, and many more; as well as cool collaborations with Music Generation Cork City, Creative Tradition, Music Mash Up, Foróige Linkpoint Knocknaheeny, Mahon Youth Development Project UBU, The Hut Youth Project CDYS, Mahon Community Pop Academy, Mahon Community Concert Band, and Cork Academy of Music.

The live debut of ‘Music Gives Me a Reason’ will also take place today at the event! A brand new collaborative song and music video set to be released this June, make sure you’re first in line to hear the track live on this special day.

Looking to get involved? There’s a packed programme of youth music workshops, including rap, beats and songwriting, as well as traditional Irish music workshops taking place. Check out the rap workshop for 6-10 year olds, 10.30am, here; or the rap workshop for 10-14 year olds, 12 noon, here.

Rhyme Island, Dublin & Wicklow | June 10

In Ballyfermot today, would-be rappers can take part in a workshop tailored for 10-16 year-olds. Taking place at Ballyfermot Community Civic Centre at 11am, the workshop is specially designed to teach the essentials of rap-writing and performance. 

Learn the basics of rhythm, rhyme, lyric writing, structure, brainstorming, and performance, and receive valuable vocal tips from expert rap ambassadors and experienced facilitators. At the workshop’s end, the burgeoning rap stars will have the opportunity to perform their creations and showcase their newfound skills and talents.

This two-hour workshop can accommodate up to 20 participants.

In Blessington Library, Wicklow, enjoy a rap-tastic Rhyme Island Showcase! Starting at 12 noon, Music Generation Wicklow and the young people from Kippure Lodge will reveal the stellar work they’ve been doing for the past five weeks following a workshop with GMCBeats.

Having created a range of pieces to express themselves through the mode of rap, poetry, and song, come along to this mini concert and celebrate their inspiring creativity!
